eATCA – An Evolved Architecture for High-end Networking
This paper discusses how the features of ATCA are being extended in order to better serve non-Telecom customers who require higher levels of system scalability, greater I/O subsystem re-use across appliances and blades, and customizable services adaptable to their current remote platform management model. The eATCA architecture extends ATCA at the hi-end and facilitates the adoption of ATCA by equipment providers requiring a less complex management model.

Platforms for the SDN Revolution
The equipment that powers today's networks has evolved over many years. Built essentially on proprietary platforms the network has closely linked the network control plane and the data plane (the traffic).
Software Defined Networking (SDN) is designed to decouple the control and data planes and thus improve overall flexibility and performance. One of the promises of SDN is to make high-capacity networks cheaper to build and allow them to be re-configured on the fly.
This article discusses the various aspects of SDN and examples how it can be applied in the real world. Applications built combining Intel Architecture and switching technology are used as an example implementation.

Managing a Carrier Cloud Gateway with 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7 Processors

This whitepaper describes how the T-Metro 8006 is so much more than an Ethernet switch. With an array of advanced features the T-Metro 8006 has significant control plane processing capability. As one of the industry’s leading providers of embedded computing technology, Advantech worked with Telco Systems to help create a solution that marries best of breed switching and application processing technology. Advantech brought together their 40GE ATCA switch blade with the latest 3rd generation Intel® Core™ i7 processor to provide Telco Systems a high performance core platform. When combined with Telco Systems’ high-density ATCA line cards and the BiNOX OS, the T-Metro 8006 was born.

An integrated, scalable and cost effective LTE Evolved Packet Core

Smaller scale RANs (Radio Access Network) are not too difficult to architect as there are a number of options available for variously sized cells, antenna and eNodeB combinations. The core network required for LTE is more tricky to scale down cost effectively. The Evolved Packet Core or EPC is built around a number of complex network elements and gateways. With each element in charge of a key function and taking into account network redundancy, this typically involves a lot of large scale hardware platforms. In a major urban area where a network would support many hundreds of thousands of subscribers (some forecasts predict that some will soon be over 1 million), the investment in equipment is easily justified. As capacities decrease it’s not so easy, so how then can service providers take best advantage of the opportunity to deploy across the multitude of smaller rural communities? Polaris Networks, working with Advantech and Comtel has built an innovative, flexible and highly affordable solution.

Fabric Mezzanine Modules Push IA Blade to 160Gbps on ATCA

This white paper is the second in a series which will take a closer look at the flexibility which FMMs bring to the fabric interface enabling 40GbE connectivity of Intel® Xeon® E5-2600 Processor based blades to 40G ATCA backplanes. Various system topologies will be covered which pave the way for the highest performance, consolidated control and data plane workloads under a single IA architecture.

A Common IA Platform for Workload Consolidation on ATCA

After more than a decade of acquisitions and shake-ups, many OEMs are enduring the costs of maintaining multiple hardware platforms and face challenges to drive core product development across dissimilar technology bases. Enter the “Common Platform” strategists who are often confronted with making inter-divisional peace whilst preparing for the next generation platform rollout.

Fabric Mezzanine Modules bring I/O and acceleration flexibility to Intel® Xeon® ATCA Blades

This white paper is the first in a series which will discuss the design advantages of Fabric Mezzanine Modules (FMMs). This paper discusses the merits of Advantech’s Customized Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (C2OTS) concept through the use of FMM technology applied to AdvancedTCA (ATCA) blades. It explains the importance of C2OTS for systems integrators, security and network equipment providers as well as government and defense communications contractors.

Packet Processing with Intel® Xeon®-based ATCA Blades and Servers
This white paper highlights key design aspects for implementing packet processing applications on Intel® Xeon® processors in AdvancedTCA® and OEM-Ready server topologies. The dramatic growth currently expected within both fixed and mobile infrastructure, is stimulating a need for new network elements to perform crucial packet processing functions such as security, traffic and packet management. The traffic volumes involved require such platforms to be capable of managing extremely high levels of performance and throughput. The goal of this paper is to provide application and platform developers greater insight as to how packet processing applications can be optimized through the use of Intel® multi-core processors and readily available eco-system software and hardware platforms.

Multicore Plus Optimized Packet Processing Software
We used to talk about POTS, or the Plain Old Telephone Service, whose only service was basic dial tone, whether the original analog or newer digital variety. A lot has changed since then, and the fixed telephony infrastructure bears no resemblance to the POTS of yesteryear. The last few years have seen similar changes in the wireless infrastructure, and, with plenty more on the horizon, we now look back fondly on what some are now calling the POCS (Plain Old Cellular Service). Making a simple phone call, ‘sans wires,’ no matter where we are, is now an intrinsic part of everyday life. The myriad wireless technologies are no longer just a voice medium, and, since the advent of usable data capabilities, the demand and associated growth of the wireless data infrastructure has been unprecedented, with no end in sight.
