Establishing Intelligent Interactive Healthcare with Cross-Device IoT Platform

Many hospitals have started to tap the benefits of Internet of Things (IoT) technology by connecting medical equipment, thin-client devices and physicians’ medical pads to cloud-based platforms so as to integrate data from various sources, expedite data access processing, and streamline workflow and services, with the ultimate goal of saving resources and time that can be used to save more lives.

When various sources of data are channeled to the cloud and can be downloaded and shared to client-end devices, many applications can be developed to improve healthcare and medical services, enabling an intelligent hospital system.

In real-life scenarios, for example, specific apps and records can be customized to the user’s identity, so doctors can log into the system through work stations or mobile medical pads and get theinformation they need for specific patients (health records, prescriptions, test results, etc.) easily and quickly; patients, on the other hand, can register either online or onsite at the hospital reception counter, or at a self-help kiosk using an ID credential or health insurance IC card, then check in to an outpatient room, see a doctor, pick up a prescription, clear their payments, and take their drugs, all through an efficient, IoT-based streamlined process.

Moreover, a public health cloud can be developed by integrating databases from multiple hospitals and healthcare institutes to accumulate big data, which can be used for outbreak investigations, epidemiological surveys or regional/national medical resource dispensing and deployment.

Application Requirements

An intelligent healthcare system needs to integrate and connect systems and devices from different departments of an hospital, including registration (reception), wardrooms and beds, medical tests and records, blood bank, patient information system, outpatient calling and queuing system, pharmacies, laboratories, medical carts, self-help kiosks, digital signage, as well as medical pads (tablets) used by physicians and nurses, and even patients’ personal computers, tablets and smartphones. There are many steps and devices that need to be linked to enable a holistic IoT medical system. Therefore, integration of devices is a big issue.

Advantech, collaborating with Microsoft, is ready to serve customers with an integrated IoT Solution, which contains Windows 10 IoT and Microsoft Azure services, combined with Advantech’s technical support ensuring connectivity and device compatibility. The Advantech-Microsoft IoT solution is a most versatile and comprehensive IoT infrastructure platform providing app resources and building blocks for system integrators and users to flexibly build and scale their custom IoT applications.

Adopting the concept of “Windows One Core”, Windows 10 IoT allows software developers to save on app investment with a universal windows platform. The cross-device versatility of Windows 10 IoT provides a consistent user experience across industry devices with enterprise-grade security governing the collection and use of individuals’ data. Sensitive information is protected with data encryption that blocks unauthorized access.

Microsoft Azure contains a series of preconfigured services—such as Azure IoT Hub, Azure Stream Analytics and Azure Storage—that help push device data to the cloud for storage and analysis. The Azure Marketplace is an accumulative platform where users and developers can optionally purchase software and IoT solutions to tailor their own applications; and vice versa, they can also sell their IoT solutions on the Marketplace.

With Windows 10 IoT and Microsoft Azure cloud services, existing information systems at hospitals can be integrated with mobile devices such as medical pads and smartphones, as well as kiosks and outpatient check-in machines, to enable a holistic IoT medical system.

Microsoft and Advantech, an authorized Microsoft Global Distributor and IoT Valued Partner, are ready to deliver a total IoT solution containing Windows 10 and Azure cloud services that can lead customers into the IoT era.
